HS1113 CAPITANA
The captain of a merchant vessel is a licensed mariner with ultimate responsibility for its safe and efficient operation, navigation, crew and passengers. To earn the title of Captain requires several years of seagoing experience and nautical studies at a maritime academy. The traditional sleeve emblem for captains is four gold stripes on the lower sleeve.

The maritime explorer Christopher Columbus opened up the sea faring trade routes from Britain to the Indies and Americas: Capitana is a cloth woven in England to celebrate the historical success of trade routes for the wool textile industry. A magnificent blend of 50% Merino wool, 40% polyester and 10% cashmere, it is one of the finest cloths in the world.

As the English textile trade grew during the fifteenth century, fine English woollens began to compete with silks in the international market. It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of wool for the economy of England: as a raw material it was England's most important export and it formed the basis for the country's largest industry, textiles. Having a population of between 15 and 18 million sheep, England produced the finest quality and highest quantity of wool in Europe.
